Killer Cross

Squalicum Park topo

Folks, this is the piece of land that inspired me to be a cyclocross promoter. Amazing terrain features, a giant staircase, wide open views of the entire course, grass/gravel/mud, and smack dab in the middle of Bellingham. No, not Cornwall Park. It's Squalicum!

This is an old light industrial site, formerly an airport called Graham's Field (click on the site in this map for a history), a gravel pit for Pacific Concrete, and a plant nursery for the Parks Dept. Most recently, it became Bellingham's newest city park and contains a relatively new baseball field. When we first started racing here in 2008, the plans were to add several more fields. Now, with pressure on government services as they are, perhaps cyclocross is the perfect low maintenance activity this type of multi-use, post-industrial site needs to keep thriving (along with dog walking, sledding, and other zero-facility type uses).

At the moment, it is the raddest hard cyclocross course in the center of town! Lots of mounds and hills, some of which may be demolished in the future, so get up them while you still have the power!

Squalicum Park

PRE-REGISTRATION is now available on BikeReg.com until Friday at 5pm for a $5 savings (minus their fee).

DIRECTIONS from I-5: You can zoom out on the Google map below to get a general idea of location. From I-5 traveling either direction, take the Guide Meridian exit, #256 (256A from the South). Turn south on Meridian, away from the madness of the Bellis Fair Mall zoo. You should very quickly see the Bellingham Country Club on your right.

The next stoplight is Birchwood Ave. Cross over some tracks and take the next right on Squalicum Parkway (our final location is on your left here, Cornwall Park).

Drive about a mile down this pretty road. The park entrance will be on your right through a yellow gate, just opposite West St. (the only road on the left). If you hit Bellingham Bay (Squalicum Harbor), you drove too far.

The main parking lot has about 75 spots. Additional parking will be permitted on the grass, BEYOND the main parking lot. The ground is mostly hard, but watch out for soft areas, and park as close to the ballfield fence as possible to preserve space.

You can zoom in on the map below to see actual course layout for 2012, complete with features, or open it in Google maps.
