Chilly Cross

Will it be chilly? Most likely. Will it be awesome to race 'cross in January? Most certainly! Will there be snow? A chance, but even at Nationals we often have snow. It's good for your handling skills. So harden the f' up!

This may be the first cyclocross race in the NW in January, and we believe it is HIGH time we got in line with our European counterparts. Quitting in December? What are we, elves?

To sweeten the pot, we are providing a special course for your January enjoyment. It's that classic Bellingham favorite from Belly Cross days, Cornwall Park! Special thanks to Bellingham Parks & Recreation for providing all three Cascade Cross venues this year, including this Gem of the North.

If that's still not enough incentive, consider the season finale after-party at the Hotel Bellwether. Details are below.

DIRECTIONS:

Cornwall Park is off Meridian St. just south of Bellis Fair Mall.

Easy access off I-5 - from either direction, take the Guide Meridian exit 256A (not the Bellis Fair ramp). Head south on Meridian to the next set of stoplights (1/2 mile).

There are two entrances on the left just past Birchwood Ave. Take the second left to access the center of the course and registration. The first left is park headquarters, a playground, and public restrooms.

Alternate parking is indicated on the course map above - a rear park entrance on Cornwall off Illinois St. There is also an elementary school on Coolidge and a couple medical buildings on Birchwood/Squalicum Ave. if things get really tight.

From Vancouver, you can take I-5 from the Peace Arch or Truck Crossing. Alternatively, take 1 to Hwy. 13 (264th) to the sometimes lightly visited Aldergrove border crossing. Drive straight down Meridian about 25 km until you cross under I-5, then follow the directions above.

Series Finale Party

As a reward to the supporters of the Bellingham cyclocross scene, from series overall winners to spectators to volunteers, I am throwing a post-race finale party at the Hotel Bellwether, right in the heart of Bellingham Bay, at 6 p.m. on Saturday, January 16th. It is a 3 mile straight shot from Cornwall Park down Squalicum Parkway, right past the location of Hilly Cross, and a stunning setting for a night out on our enviable coastal town with fellow bike racers and 'cross fans.

You can anticipate all of the following: 1 hosted keg of Boundary Bay IPA, trays of assorted appetizers, turntable action from DJ IDLHNDS, current footage from European cyclocross World Cup races (with the projector powered by YOU using the Power Wheel from the Make.Shift project), and award presentations to both 2008 and 2009(10) Cascade Cross Series overall winners!

This event is just $5 for Chilly Cross participants and volunteers, and only $10 for spectators & cyclocross fans. But here's the deal - I have to limit this to about 75 people, so you have to come down to the Cornwall park during the race to sign up (+1 guest).

I want to see your pretty (muddy) face at a cyclocross race in January! Is that too much to ask?
